1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Looking Back (-ing) vs Looking Forward (To)

These key verbs change their core meaning completely depending on whether they are followed by an -ing gerund (past memory / finished action) or a to-infinitive (duty / purpose / forward-looking).

remember doing	Have a memory of a past event: “I remember locking* the door (I have the mental picture).”*
remember to do	Remember not to forget a duty: “Please remember to lock* the door.”*
regret doing	Feel sorry about something you did: “I regret saying* those words.”*
regret to say	Formal announcement of bad news: “We regret to inform* you that your flight is delayed.”*

2 Tier 2 – STOP doing vs STOP to do & TRY

stop doing	Terminate the activity: “He stopped smoking* (he doesn’t smoke anymore).”*
stop to do	Pause what you are doing in order to do something else: “He stopped to smoke* a cigarette.”*
try to do vs try doing	try to do: make an effort to achieve sth difficult. try doing: experiment with a method to see if it solves a problem.
