A had better (I’d better) — the best thing to do now

We ‘d better leave now.

I’d better do something = it is the wise thing to do in this situation. If you don’t, there will be a problem or danger:

warningWe‘d better hurry or we’ll miss the train.
advice nowIt might rain — you‘d better take an umbrella.
+ base verbI‘d better go — never to go.

💡 Full form is had better; in speech we say I’d / you’d / we’d better. Tag: I’d better phone her, hadn’t I?

B Negative had better not · had is not past here

+had better doYou‘d better wear a coat.
had better not doYou‘d better not be late.

The word had looks past, but the meaning of had better is present or future, never past:

now/future I‘d better go to the bank now. ✓
not past I had better went

💡 Negative is ‘d better not: I‘d better not say anything yet.

C had better or should?

Both give advice, but they are not the same:

had better one specific situation + a danger if you don’t: The film starts at 8 — we‘d better go now.
should advice in general, no special danger: It’s a great film — you should see it.
specific + danger → had better general good idea → should had better = stronger / more urgent

💡 Don’t use had better for general advice: You’d better go out more oftenYou should go out more often.

D It’s time …

It’s time we went home.

Two patterns — both about now:

It’s time to doIt’s time to go home. / It’s time for us to go.
It’s time + pastIt’s time we went home. (= we should go now)
It’s about time + pastIt’s about time you did something! (stronger / complaint)
past = now It’s time they were here. ✓ (they’re late)
not present It’s time they are here

💡 It’s time + past means the present, and often criticises: It’s time you tidied your room!

📌
Rememberhad better + base verb (no to) = best thing to do now, or there’s trouble · negative = had better not · had here is present/future, not past · use should (not had better) for general advice · It’s time + past (we went / they were / you did) means now and often criticises · It’s about time = stronger. Quick check: It’s late — we‘d better go and it’s time we went.
