1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Complaining About Others’ Behavior

We use I wish … would when we want someone else to do something, or when we are complaining about an annoying present habit and want it to stop.

😤 Annoying Habits (Wish + Would)

– “I wish you would listen when I’m speaking to you!”
– “I wish it would stop raining.”

🚫 No ‘Wish I would’ Rule

– Never say ~~I wish I would~~ for yourself. Say: “I wish I could…” or “I wish I had…”

2 Tier 2 – Wish + Past Simple vs Wish + Would

I wish Sarah lived nearer.	Regretting a general present state (Sarah lives far away).
I wish Sarah would visit us.	Urging an action / expressing desire for her to change her behavior.

3 Tier 3 – Top 3 Common Learner Pitfalls

✓ I wish I were / was taller.

– Rule: Do not use would with the subject I in wish clauses; use past simple (were/was).

✗ ~~I wish you wouldn’t be so late yesterday.~~

✓ I wish you hadn’t been so late yesterday.

– Rule: Past regrets require wish + had (not) + past participle.

✗ ~~I wish you will stop smoking.~~

✓ I wish you would stop smoking.

– Rule: Irritated complaints about habits take would, never will.
