A A finished time always takes the past

Past simple finishedA time that is over and gone: I lost my keys yesterday. · Paul left ten minutes ago. · They moved in 2018.

⚠️ Never use the present perfect with ago, yesterday, last…, in 2018, or when…? — even if it happened only a minute ago, the time is finished, so use the past simple.

B An unfinished period can take the present perfect

Finished period → did yesterday · last week · last year · in 2015
Unfinished period → have done today · this week · this year · so far · recently

💡 Have you seen Anna this morning? — asked while it is still morning. Later in the day you would say: Did you see Anna this morning? (the morning is over).

C The result is happening now

Tom has gone out. (present perfect — he is away now)
Tom went out at 8 and came back at 9. (past simple — finished story)

When you care about the result you can see now, use the present perfect. When you tell a finished story with times, use the past.

📌
Rememberhave done = unfinished time / result now (no finished time word) · did = a finished time you can name (yesterday, ago, last…, in 2018, when…?). If you can add yesterday or ago, use the past simple.
