1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Avoiding Repetition with Auxiliaries

We use auxiliary verbs (am, is, have, do, can, will) in short answers, additions, and agreements to avoid repeating entire predicates.

➕ So am I / So do I (Affirmative Agreement)

– “I’m tired. — So am I.”
– “I like coffee. — So do I.”

➖ Neither am I / Neither do I (Negative Agreement)

– “I can’t swim. — Neither can I / Nor can I.”

– Rule: Agreeing with a negative statement requires Neither / Nor.

– Rule: The negative response with hope is always I hope not.
