1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Lifetime Periods & Unfinished Time
Use the present perfect when talking about a period of time that continues from the past up to the present moment (e.g. your entire life, today, this morning, this month).
– “I‘ve never had a motorbike in my life.”
– “It’s the most beautiful city I‘ve ever visited.”
– “Have you had a holiday this year?”
– “I haven’t seen Tom lately / recently.”
2 Tier 2 – The ‘It’s the First Time’ Formula
– “It’s the first time he has driven a car.” (NOT he drives).
– “This is the second time I have lost my passport.”
3 Tier 3 – Top 3 Common Learner Pitfalls
– Rule: Open life experiences asking ever require the present perfect.
– Rule: The construction It’s the first / second time… takes the present perfect.
– Rule: When the time period (this morning) is still ongoing, use present perfect.
