1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Gerund-Only Verbs
Certain verbs in English are followed by the -ing form (gerund), never the infinitive with to.
avoid · finish · postpone
risk · practise · fancy · imagine
– “Do you mind waiting a moment?”
– “He suggested going to the beach.”
2 Tier 2 – Fixed Idiomatic Expressions + -ing
– put off (= postpone) ➔ “Don’t put off making a decision.”
– carry on / go on (= continue) ➔ “He carried on talking.”
– keep / keep on (= do repeatedly) ➔ “She kept interrupting me.”
3 Tier 3 – Top 3 Common Learner Pitfalls
– Rule: Suggest is followed by the gerund -ing, never the infinitive.
– Rule: Avoid takes -ing.
