1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Polite Embedded Questions
When asking polite indirect questions (starting with Do you know…? / Could you tell me…? / I wonder…), the second part follows normal statement word order (Subject + Verb).
– “What time does the bank open?”
– “Could you tell me what time the bank opens?”
2 Tier 2 – If / Whether in Indirect Yes/No Questions
– “Did anyone see you?” ➔ “Do you know if / whether anyone saw you?”
– “Is Jack at home?” ➔ “I wonder if Jack is at home.”
3 Tier 3 – Top 3 Common Learner Pitfalls
– Rule: Indirect questions require statement order (subject + verb: the station is).
– Rule: Drop the auxiliary does and add -s to the main verb (leaves).
– Rule: Embedded past clauses take the affirmative past verb (went, not did go).
