1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Word Order in Reported Questions
In reported questions, the word order changes to normal statement order (Subject + Verb) and question marks and auxiliaries (do / does / did) are dropped.

2 Tier 2 – Reporting Orders & Requests (Tell / Ask sb TO DO)
– “Stay in bed!” ➔ The doctor told me to stay in bed.

– Rule: Do not use auxiliary did in reported questions; use statement word order.
– Rule: Yes/No reported questions must be linked with if or whether.
– Rule: Tell takes a direct personal object without to (told us).
