A Form — used to + base verb (same for everyone)

I / you / he / she / we / they used to play
+I used to play tennis. · She used to have long hair.
We didn’t use to like coffee. · He never used to cook.
?Did you use to live here? · Did it use to rain a lot?

💡 In questions and negatives we drop the -d: did you use to…? · didn’t use to… — never did you used to.

B Use — things that were true before, but not now

used to describes a past habit (something done regularly) or a past state that has now changed.

Past habit I used to walk to school every day. (I don’t now)
Past state There used to be a cinema here. (it’s gone now)

📖 It works with states too — verbs like be, have, like, know: She used to have a motorbike. · I didn’t use to like spicy food.

C used to is past only — no present form

I use to go to the gym. (✗ there is no present “use to”)
I go to the gym. (✓ present habit → present simple)

⚠️ For something happening now, use the present simple (I play, she works). Keep used to for the past only.

📌
Rememberused to + verb = a past habit or state that is no longer true. After did / didn’t use the base form use to. There is no present “use to” — for now, use the present simple.
