Study the notes, then work through the six exercises.
A I’ll … — offer, agree, promise
When you offer, agree or promise to do something at the moment of speaking, use will (‘ll) + base verb — not going to.
| Offer | That bag looks heavy. I’ll carry it for you. |
| Agree | “Can you post this letter?” — “Sure, I’ll post it on the way.” |
| Promise | Thanks for the loan. I’ll pay you back on Friday. |
💡 The offer or promise is decided as you speak. After will always use the base verb — I’ll to help / I’ll helps → I’ll help.
B Will you …? = request · won’t = refuse
Use Will you …? to ask somebody to do something, and won’t when a person (or thing) refuses to do something.
⚠️ won’t = will not. With people it often means “refuses to”; with machines it means “fails to”.
C Shall I …? / Shall we …?
Use Shall I …? to offer help or ask if something is a good idea, and Shall we …? to make a suggestion. With question words you ask for advice.
📖 Shall is mainly used with I and we in questions. For other people, use will.
