Country names in English follow specific capitalization and definite article rules that are essential for accurate communication and formal tests.

💡 The Definite Article Rule: Use the only when the country name includes words like Kingdom, States, Republic, Union, or is plural: the UK, the USA, the Netherlands, the Philippines. Single-word countries do NOT take the (Canada, Japan, Spain – NOT the Canada).
2 Tier 2 – Essential Prepositions: In vs To vs From
| IN + Country (location) | Where you are or live: “I live in Canada.” |
| TO + Country (direction) | Movement/travel destination: “We are flying to France next week.” |
| FROM + Country (origin) | Where you originate: “They come from Japan.” |
3 Tier 3 – Top 3 Common Learner Pitfalls
– Rule: Do not use the before standard single-word country names.
– Rule: Verbs of movement (go, travel, fly) take to, not in.
– Rule: Always capitalize country names and include the for kingdom/union nations.
