Word Notes – The body
1. Basic word groups
Face: eyes, ears, nose, mouth, cheeks and chin. Hand: palm, fingers and thumb. Joints: shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee and ankle. Foot: heel and toes. A joint is a place where parts of the body meet and can move.
A cheek is below an eye. The chin is below the mouth.
An elbow is in an arm. A knee is in a leg.
Your wrist is above your hand. Your ankle is above your foot.
2. Useful patterns
Use my, your, his or her before a body word. Put a number before a plural word. Useful phrases: bend a knee, lift an arm, touch your chin and give a thumbs-up.
Farah lifts her left arm.
The paper robot has two short legs.
A ring is on a finger. A watch is around a wrist.
3. Watch out: common mistakes
Foot becomes feet; tooth becomes teeth. Hair usually means all the hair on a head, so use hair without -s. A hand has fingers and a thumb; a foot has toes. A heel is the back of a foot; a palm is the inside of a hand.
Wrong: two foots. Better: two feet. Foot has an irregular plural.
Wrong: Her hairs is curly. Better: Her hair is curly. Use hair for the whole hairstyle.
One tooth / two teeth; one cheek / two cheeks.
