A how to report a question

When we report a question, three things change:

1. word orderUse statement order (subject + verb). Do not invert or use do/does/did.
2. verbMove the verb one tense back (same as reported statements in Unit 47).
3. linking wordAdd a question word (where / what / why…) or if / whether for yes/no questions.

💡 No question mark in a reported question: She asked where I lived. ❌ She asked where did I live?

B wh- questions — keep the question word

For questions beginning with who / what / where / when / why / how, keep the question word and use statement word order:

He asked + question word + subject + verb (back)
directreported
“Where do you live?” do drops outHe asked where I lived.
“What are you doing?” are movesShe asked what I was doing.
“Why did she leave?” did drops outThey asked why she had left.
“How many hours do you sleep?”He asked how many hours she slept.

C yes/no questions — use if or whether

For yes/no questions (no question word), add if or whether before the subject:

She asked + if / whether + subject + verb (back)
✓ if “Are you hungry?” → She asked me if I was hungry.
✓ whether “Can you drive?” → He asked whether I could drive.
✗ inversion She asked if was I hungry.
✗ no link He asked could I drive.

💡 if and whether mean the same here — both are correct.

D ask — not say or tell

For questions, use ask. Say and tell are for statements.

ask ✓ She asked me where I worked.
ask ✓ He asked if I was ready.
say ✗ She said me where I worked.
tell ✗ He told if I was ready.

💡 You can ask someone (with or without a person) — no special rule like tell + person.

📌
Remember — Reported questions: ask + question word / if / whether + subject + verb (one tense back). Use statement order (no inversion, no do/does/did). No question mark. Use ask (not say or tell) for questions.
