A for vs since
| for a period | for three days · for a week · for years · for ten minutes |
| since a point | since Monday · since 2010 · since 9 o’clock · since I was a child |
B When…? vs How long…?
When? When did you arrive? — An hour ago. (past simple)
How long? How long have you been here? — For an hour. (present perfect)
💡 ago goes with the past simple and a finished point: She arrived two hours ago. Don’t mix it with the present perfect.
📌
Remember — for + length of time · since + starting point. Ask When…? with past simple + ago; ask How long…? with the present perfect.
