A How we form it

Tiêu đềI · She · They
+
am / is / arethe verb “be”
+
verb + -ingwork → working
+ I‘m working  ·  she‘s working  ·  they‘re working
I‘m not working  ·  she isn’t working  ·  they aren’t working
? Am I working?  ·  Is she working?  ·  Are they working?

B What it really means

You use it when you are in the middle of an action — it started before now and it isn’t finished yet.

I am doing PAST FUTURE NOW ▼ started not finished ▼

C When we use it

Happening right now

An action at the moment of speaking — not finished.

“Be quiet — I’m trying to read.”
📅
Temporary, around now

This week / these days — even if not this exact second.

“Tom is working in a café this summer.”
📈
Changing situations

With get, become, rise, grow, improve, start…

“The days are getting longer.”
🗓️
Planned future (Unit 19)

An arrangement you’ve already fixed.

“We’re meeting Anna at six tonight.”

D Spelling of the -ing form

most verbs + ingwork → working · play → playing
ends in -e drop emake → making · write → writing
vowel+consonant double itrun → running · begin → beginning
ends in -ie → -yinglie → lying · die → dying
ends in -y keep ystudy → studying · play → playing

E State verbs — usually NOT continuous

Some verbs describe a state, not an action. We don’t normally use them in the -ing form:

knowbelieveunderstandmeanrememberlikelovehatewantneedpreferseehearbelongown
I know the answer.
I’m knowing the answer.
She wants to go home.
She’s wanting to go home.

💡 A few verbs change meaning: I’m thinking about it (= considering) and I’m having lunch (= eating) are correct.

📌
Rememberam/is/are + verb-ing for actions in progress now or around now. Don’t use it with state verbs like know, want, like.
