A Passive again — but with be / been / being

A passive is always some form of be + past participle. In Unit 42 you saw is done and was done. Now we add a tense or a modal in front, and the word be changes to been or being:

modal It can be done. · It will be done.
perfect It has been done.
continuous It is being done.

💡 The word in front tells you which to use: will/can/must → be · have/has/had → been · is/are/was/were → being.

B be done — after a modal or will

After will, can, could, must, should, have to, going to… the passive is be + past participle. The verb be never changes here:

subject + will / can / must + be + past participle
future → will beYour car will be repaired tomorrow.
possible → can beThis problem can be solved easily.
necessary → must beThe letters must be posted today.

💡 Say be done, never been done or being done, after a modal.

C been done — present & past perfect

After have / has (present perfect) or had (past perfect), the passive is been + past participle. We use it for something already finished:

has/have beenThe work has been finished. · All the tickets have been sold.
had been (earlier past)By six o’clock the job had been done.

💡 have/has/had + been + V3. The result is what matters, not who did it.

D being done — and what to watch out for

After is / are / was / were, an action happening at that moment is being + past participle:

now The street is being cleaned right now.
past moment When I arrived, the house was being painted.
It is being repaired. happening nowis been repaired
It has been repaired. already finishedhas being repaired
It will be repaired. after a modalwill been repaired

💡 Don’t swap them: being = in progress now · been = finished (with have/had) · be = after will/can/must.

📌
Rememberevery passive is (a form of) be + past participle: will/can/must be done · have/has/had been done · is/are/was/were being done. The word in front decides: modal → be, perfect → been, continuous → being.
