If your child is between six and twelve, the Cambridge Young Learners exams – Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers – are the friendliest introduction to English exams ever designed. There is no pass, no fail, and no disappointing certificate: every child receives a result showing up to five “shields” for Listening, Reading & Writing, and Speaking. The exam experience feels like a colourful school activity, not a test.
What each level looks like
Starters suits children after roughly one to two years of English lessons. Tasks are picture-based: colouring instructions, matching words to images, very short conversations. Movers, after two to three years, adds short stories, simple past tense and longer listening. Flyers, after three to four years, works at A2 level – the same language level as the adult KET exam – with connected writing and more independent reading.
Why teachers love the shields system
Because it changes the question from “did I pass?” to “how many shields did I get?”, children stay motivated even when a skill is weak. A child with three shields in Listening simply knows what to practise next – nothing is framed as failure. This makes YLE ideal as a yearly milestone: many families take one level per year as a natural progress report.
A realistic preparation plan
Six to eight weeks is enough for most children. Weeks one and two: one practice Listening paper, done together, twice – familiarity with the task types is half the score. Weeks three and four: Reading & Writing papers, focusing on spelling, since YLE requires correctly spelled answers. Weeks five and six: Speaking practice with a parent playing examiner – the questions are predictable and can be rehearsed. Keep sessions to twenty minutes and always end on a success.
After Flyers: the natural next steps
A comfortable Flyers result means your child is ready to attempt A2 Key (KET) – a “real” Cambridge exam whose certificate never expires. From there the path continues to B1 Preliminary (PET) and beyond.
