Skill drills – by question type
short, focused, one type at a time
Band 7 → 8 usually comes down to a few specific question types and reading speed. These short drills isolate one skill so you can practise the exact move it needs, then check yourself instantly.
True / False / Not Given
Train the hardest decision in Reading: telling False apart from Not Given without using outside knowledge.
Matching Headings
Find the main idea of each paragraph and match it to the right heading – without getting trapped by detail.
Paraphrase & Synonym Drill
The foundation skill for every question type: match a question to the sentence in the text even when the words are different.
Yes / No / Not Given
Follow the writer’s opinion and claims – the views version of True / False / Not Given.
Matching Information
Scan to locate a specific detail in the right paragraph – the words are always reworded, so you hunt the meaning, not the keyword.
Sentence / Summary Completion
Scan for the answer and respect the word limit – fast, accurate gap-filling with the exact word from the text.
Multiple Choice
Eliminate distractors and match long paraphrases without falling for keyword traps.
Timing & Pacing Strategy
20 minutes per passage: the order to work in, when to guess – plus a reading-speed check and a practice timer.
How to use these for band 7.5–8.0
Start with Practice Passage 1 under the timer to see where you stand. Then drill your weakest question types – for most learners at band 7 that’s True / False / Not Given and Matching Headings. Once accuracy is solid, switch to full timed passages to push your speed, which is what usually separates band 7 from band 8.
