Paraphrase & Synonym Match

The foundation skill behind every Reading question: recognising when two sentences mean the same thing, even though the words are different. For each sentence, choose the option that is a true paraphrase – and avoid the ones that only reuse the same words.

What makes a good paraphrase

  • Same meaning, different words. A real paraphrase keeps the idea but swaps the vocabulary and often the grammar.
  • Watch for opposites. A trap option often reuses the keywords but reverses the meaning (rose → fell, agree → disagree).
  • Watch for added ideas. If an option adds a detail the sentence never gave, it is not a paraphrase – it is Not Given information.
