About IELTS

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) measures all four skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking – and reports a band score from 1 to 9 for each skill plus an overall band. Universities typically ask for an overall 6.0–7.0 (Academic), while immigration programmes often accept General Training. Vocabulary range is one of the fastest ways to lift your band: it directly feeds the Lexical Resource criterion in Writing and Speaking, and it speeds up Reading and Listening.

What you can practise here

This hub gives you topic-based vocabulary training across the themes IELTS loves to recycle – education, environment, technology, health, work and more – with interactive exercises that check your answers instantly. Beyond vocabulary, All English 4U also offers an IELTS Writing examiner that scores your Task 1 and Task 2 essays on the four official criteria (Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy) with sentence-by-sentence corrections, plus reading and listening practice sections.

Study tips from our teachers

Learn vocabulary in collocations, not single words – IELTS rewards “heavily polluted” and “take out a loan”, not just “pollution” and “money”. Do one topic at a time and re-test yourself two days later; spaced repetition beats cramming. In Writing, a smaller set of words used accurately scores higher than rare words used wrongly. And practise paraphrasing every prompt you meet: paraphrase is the single most tested skill across the whole exam.

How long does it take to go up one band?

As a rule of thumb, moving up a full band takes 150–300 hours of guided study. Consistent daily practice – 30 minutes of vocabulary plus one writing task a week with feedback – is the most reliable route.
