1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Inversion in Questions

To make a question with be, simply swap the order of the subject and the verb (Subject + VerbVerb + Subject).

You are late. ➔ Are you late?
David is at home. ➔ Is David at home?
They are ready. ➔ Are they ready?
❓ WH-Question Words
Where: “Where is the bus stop?”
How much: “How much are these apples?”
Why: “Why are you angry?”

2 Tier 2 – Short Answers (Yes, I am / No, I’m not)

Affirmative (No Contraction) “Yes, I am.” / “Yes, he is.” / “Yes, they are.” (NOT Yes, I’m / Yes, he’s).
Negative (Contractions Allowed) “No, I‘m not.” / “No, he isn’t.” / “No, they aren’t.”

Rule: Always invert the auxiliary and subject in English questions.
