When Marta turned sixteen, she made a decision that surprised everyone: she would spend a whole year without a smartphone. “My friends thought I was joking,” she says. “My mum thought it would last a week.”
The first month was the hardest. Marta kept reaching for a phone that wasn’t there, especially on the bus to school. “I didn’t know what to do with my hands,” she laughs. She started carrying a small book of puzzles instead.
Slowly, things changed. She began to notice details on her journey – a garden she had never seen before, an old man who waved at the bus every morning. Her sleep improved because she stopped reading messages late at night. Her exam results got better too, although she says that wasn’t the point.
Was anything difficult? “Meeting friends,” she admits. “Everyone arranges things in group chats, so I was sometimes the last to know.” Her solution was simple: a paper diary, and asking people to tell her their plans face to face.
Now the year is over, Marta has a phone again – but she leaves it at home at weekends. “I learned that I don’t need it as much as I thought. That’s worth knowing.”

The course lasts ten weeks and costs sixty-five pounds, which includes all printing. You don’t need an expensive camera – the phone in your pocket is fine – but please bring a notebook to every class, as you’ll write down ideas for your projects. In week five, we’ll visit the old harbour to practise taking photos outside – the bus is free, but you must book your seat with the office before Friday.
