1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: The “Past of the Past”
When telling a story in the past simple, use the past perfect (had + done) to refer to an event that took place even earlier.
⏪ Past Perfect Simple (had + done)
– Completed before another past action: “When we arrived at the cinema, the film had already started.”
– Result state in the past: “I couldn’t pay because I had forgotten my wallet.”
– Result state in the past: “I couldn’t pay because I had forgotten my wallet.”

– Duration leading up to a past moment: “They had been driving for five hours when the car broke down.”
– Cause of a past state: “Her eyes were red because she had been crying.”

✗ When I arrived at the station, the train left. (missed it)

– Rule: If the train departed before arrival, use the past perfect (had left).
✗ By the time we got home, the rain stopped.
✓ By the time we got home, the rain had stopped.
– Rule: Clauses with by the time require the past perfect in the main clause.
✗ He had been knowing her for ten years before they married.
✓ He had known her for ten years before they married.
– Rule: Stative verbs (know, have, believe) cannot be used in the past perfect continuous.
