THE SATURDAY REPAIR CLUB
Nina Martinez is a student at Hillview School. Last autumn, she noticed that people were throwing away lamps, toys and other small things that could be fixed. She asked her science teacher, Mr Cole, for help, and together they opened a Repair Club in the school library.
The club met on the first Saturday of each month. Parents, older students and a local electrician called Omar volunteered there. Visitors brought lamps, toys and small kitchen machines. For safety, the club did not accept mobile phones or equipment that used gas.
At the first meeting, visitors brought eighteen items. The team repaired eleven of them. Four needed spare parts, and three could not be fixed. Repairs were free, but visitors could make a donation. The club used this money to buy tools. Nina also wrote a simple label explaining every repair.
This spring, the club moved to the community centre because the school library was too small. Nina hopes to offer short lessons about caring for bicycles, but she has not chosen a date yet.
