What an IELTS Speaking Examiner Report Looks Like
Before you record a single word, see exactly what comes back. Below is a complete sample report for a full Speaking test – Parts 1, 2 and 3 – from a learner targeting Band 6.5. Same structure, same depth, same honesty as the report you would receive.
Band for each of the four criteria · your own words quoted and corrected · two answers upgraded to your target band · four-week plan
The test the learner took
Test set A · three parts, eleven minutes of recording · learner’s target: Band 6.5. Every question is written by All English 4U, never copied from a real exam paper.
Part 1 · Everyday questions (30 seconds each)
- What is the first thing you usually do after waking up?
- Do you prefer busy mornings or slow mornings? Why?
- How often do you use your phone to learn something new?
- Is there an app you would recommend to a friend? Why?
Part 2 · Cue card (1 minute to prepare, 2 minutes to speak)
Describe a skill you learned that you now use often.
You should say: what the skill is · how you learned it · how long it took you to learn – and explain why this skill is useful in your life now.
Part 3 · Discussion (45 seconds each)
- Why do some people give up when learning a new skill?
- Do you think schools teach enough practical skills? Why or why not?
- How has technology changed the way people learn new skills?
- Which skills do you think will matter most in the next twenty years?
What the learner said
Three extracts from the recording, transcribed as spoken – hesitations included, because they are part of the assessment. The report always quotes your real words, never a cleaned-up version.
Um… the first thing, I think I check my phone, because, er, maybe someone send me message in the night. After that I drink one glass of water and … yeah, I go to bathroom. Actually I very like the morning because it very quiet.
I want to talk about the skill of, er, editing video. I learn it two years ago when I am in university. Nobody teach me, I learn by myself, I watch YouTube tutorial every night, maybe two hour. At first it very difficult because the software have many button and I don’t know what they do. Um… after maybe six month I can make one short video. Now I use this skill for my part-time job, I make video for a coffee shop near my house and they pay me. So I think it very useful for me.
Because they want the result very fast. When they don’t see the progress in one month, they feel bored and they stop. Also maybe they don’t have … er … people to support them, like friend or teacher.
1 · Score summary
| Criterion | Band | In one line |
|---|---|---|
| Fluency & Coherence (FC) | 6 | Willing to speak at length and easy to follow; pauses come from searching for words, and ideas are linked with and / because / also only. |
| Lexical Resource (LR) | 5.5 | Enough vocabulary for the topic, but general and repetitive (very 6×, skill 5×); no collocation for the Part 2 topic. |
| Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA) | 5 | Meaning is clear, but the past-tense story is told in the present, and be and plural -s disappear in most sentences. |
| Pronunciation (PR) | 6 | Understandable throughout – the strongest criterion. Word stress slips on longer words and final consonants are often dropped. |
| Overall band | 5.5 | Average 5.625. When an average falls between two half bands we give the lower one – the same convention a real examiner uses. |
Estimated exam band if this performance is typical of you: 5.5. Gap to target 6.5: one band, blocked mainly by GRA and LR. Good news – your fluency and pronunciation are already at the target level, so the work is narrow and specific.
2 · What you did well
You kept talking for the full two minutes
Part 2 ran to 1 minute 52 seconds with no long silence. Many Band 5 candidates stop after 45 seconds – that alone caps their Fluency. You never needed the examiner to prompt you.
Every answer was on topic and concrete
The coffee-shop job, the six months, the two hours a night – real detail, not memorised filler. This is exactly what earns the Part 2 mark, and it is the hardest habit to teach.
You are easy to understand
Rhythm and intonation carry meaning; nothing had to be replayed. Pronunciation is your strongest criterion at Band 6 – keep it and fix the endings, and it moves to 6.5 quickly.
3 · Priority corrections
Your six highest-value fixes, each quoted from your own recording. Explanations are written in Vietnamese in the real report, exactly as below.
I learn it two years ago when I am in university → I learned it two years ago, when I was at universityKể chuyện quá khứ phải giữ thì quá khứ từ đầu đến cuối. Lỗi này lặp suốt Part 2 (learn, teach, watch, have) – sửa được một mình nó đã kéo GRA từ 5 lên 5.5.
it very difficult / it very quiet → it was very difficult / it’s very quietTiếng Việt không cần “thì/là” nên bạn hay bỏ động từ be. Examiner nghe rất rõ lỗi này vì nó xuất hiện ở gần như mọi câu miêu tả.
I watch YouTube tutorial every night, maybe two hour → I watched YouTube tutorials every night, maybe two hoursThiếu -s số nhiều. Đây là lỗi kép: mất điểm GRA, và vì âm cuối cũng không bật ra nên mất điểm cả Pronunciation.
I very like the morning / it very useful for me → I’m a morning person / it’s come in really usefulVery không đứng trước động từ, và dùng very sáu lần khiến LR bị chốt ở 5.5. Đổi sang really / genuinely / incredibly và học vài cụm nói tự nhiên là nâng được ngay.
e-DIT-ing (trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết 2) → ED-it-ingSai trọng âm làm người nghe phải đoán từ trong nửa giây – đủ để tụt Pronunciation. Với từ 3 âm tiết, học trọng âm cùng lúc với nghĩa, đừng học sau.
Also maybe they don’t have … people to support them → Another reason is that they often have nobody to keep them going – a friend, or a teacherBạn chỉ dùng and / because / also để nối ý. Thêm 3–4 cụm mở ý (Another reason is…, The main thing is…, That said…) là cách nhanh nhất đưa FC lên 6.5.
4 · Two of your answers, upgraded to Band 6.5
The report rewrites your real answers at your target band – not Band 9 – so the next step sounds like something you could actually say out loud tomorrow.
Part 2 · the middle of your talk
Nobody taught me – I picked it up on my own. I’d watch YouTube tutorials every night, maybe a couple of hours at a time. At the start it was really frustrating, because the software had so many buttons and I had no idea what half of them did. It took me about six months before I could put together a decent short video.
What changed: the past tense holds throughout, a couple of hours replaces two hour, and frustrating / picked it up / put together replace very difficult. Same story, one band higher.
Part 3 · Why do some people give up?
Mainly because they expect results too quickly. If they don’t see any progress within a month, they lose interest and drift away from it. Another reason is that they have nobody to keep them going – a friend learning the same thing, or a teacher checking in on them.
What changed: one discourse marker (Another reason is…), one precise verb phrase (lose interest and drift away), and the article and plural errors are gone. Length is almost identical – Band 6.5 is not about talking more.
5 · Your four-week plan to Band 6.5
Every report ends with four weeks of work you can do alone with a phone, aimed at the two criteria blocking your target. Each week links to a resource already on this site.
Week 2 · Put the endings backDictation is the fastest cure for dropped -s and -ed: you cannot type what you do not hear. Ten minutes a day, then read the same sentences aloud with the endings exaggerated.GRA + PR 5 → 6
Week 3 · Retire the word “very”Build a short list of precise alternatives and topic collocations, then re-answer the Part 2 cue card using three of them. Vocabulary is what separates your 5.5 from a 6.5.LR 5.5 → 6.5
Week 4 · Borrow native linking phrasesShadow one recording a day and steal the phrases speakers use to open, extend and qualify ideas. Then re-record all four Part 3 answers and compare with week one.FC 6 → 6.5
Honest expectation: with this plan followed properly, Band 6.5 is realistic in roughly two to three months – not two weeks. Anyone promising faster is selling you something.
