What you’ll learnWill vs Be Going To vs Present Continuous for future
English does not have a single future tense; instead, it uses different structures depending on whether you are deciding now, stating a prior intention, or reporting an arrangement.
🔮 WILL (Instant Decisions / Beliefs)
– Instant decision at speaking moment:“The phone is ringing – I’ll answer it.”
– Offers & promises:“I’ll help you carry those bags.”
– Opinion predictions:“I think it will rain tomorrow.”
🎯 BE GOING TO (Plans & Evidence)
– Pre-existing intentions:“I’m going to study medicine next year.”
– Prediction with visible present evidence:“Look at those black clouds – it’s going to rain!”
🗓️ PRESENT CONTINUOUS & SIMPLE
– Present continuous (Arrangements):“I’m meeting Sarah at 6 PM.”
– Present simple (Timetables):“The train leaves at 8:15 AM.”
2 Tier 2 – Future Time Clauses with When / As soon as / Until
⚖️ Present Tense After Time Linkers
In time clauses starting with when, as soon as, before, after, until, use the present simple even when referring to the future:
– “I will call you when I arrive.” (NOT when I will arrive).
– “We’ll start dinner as soon as dad comes home.”
