1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: The “Past of the Past”
When telling a story in the past simple, use the past perfect (had + done) to refer to an event that took place even earlier.
⏪ Past Perfect Simple (had + done)
– Completed before another past action:“When we arrived at the cinema, the film had already started.”
– Result state in the past:“I couldn’t pay because I had forgotten my wallet.”

– Duration leading up to a past moment:“They had been driving for five hours when the car broke down.”

– Rule: If the train departed before arrival, use the past perfect (had left).
