1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Narrative Past Tenses & Habitual Past

B2 exams require seamless switching between completed past actions, interrupted actions, earlier past background events, and past habitual patterns.

⏪ Past Simple & Continuous
Main narrative events: “He unlocked the door and stepped inside.”
Background atmosphere: “The rain was pouring and wind was howling.”
⏳ Past Perfects & Habits
Past of the past: “She had already booked the flights.”
Used to: past states & habits (“I used to live in York”).
Would: past actions/habits only (“Every summer we would swim in the lake” – NOT for states).

2 Tier 2 – Used To vs Would

⚖️ Used To vs Would Rule
used to Works for BOTH past states and past actions: “I used to have a dog” (state) / “I used to run daily” (action).
would Works ONLY for repeated past actions: “Grandpa would tell us stories by the fire.” (Never say: I would have a dog).

3 Tier 3 – Top 3 Common Learner Pitfalls

When I was a child, I would live in London.
When I was a child, I used to live in London.

Rule: Would cannot be used with stative verbs (live, have, be, believe) for past states.

By the time the ambulance arrived, the patient died.
By the time the ambulance arrived, the patient had died.

Rule: Events completed before another past milestone take the past perfect.

We didn’t used to go abroad for holidays.
We didn’t use to go abroad for holidays.

Rule: Drop the ‘d’ in use to after did / didn’t.
