Reading & Writing
A five-part, 25-question picture paper written and illustrated for All English 4U. It follows familiar Pre-A1 activity types without reproducing a published test.
Look and read - tick or cross
Put a tick if the sentence matches the picture, or a cross if it does not.
Look and read - write yes or no
Look at the sunny zoo scene. Write yes if the sentence is right and no if it is wrong.

Look at the pictures - write the words
Use the letters to spell each animal word. Example: tiger - t/i/g/e/r.
A horse - choose the right word
Read the description. Choose a word from the word bank for each gap.

A HORSE
I am a big and friendly animal. I have four long legs and a long tail. I live on a green [1] with cows and sheep. I like running in the [2] on sunny mornings. I love eating sweet green [3] from trees. When I am thirsty, I drink cold [4] from a bucket. Children love to ride on my [5] in the afternoon. What am I? I am a horse.
Look at the pictures - answer the questions
Write a one-word answer. Examples: Where are the children? - in the garden. What is Tom flying? - a kite.

- Part 4, Question 4: water - Animals drink fresh cold water when they are thirsty.
- Part 4, Question 5: back - People sit and ride on a horse's back.
- Part 5, Question 1: apple - The girl is sitting on the blanket eating a red apple.
- Part 5, Question 2: tree - The kite string is caught in the green branches of the tree.
- Part 5, Question 3: ladder - Dad is walking across the grass carrying a wooden ladder.
- Part 5, Question 4: Dad / father - Dad has retrieved the kite and is holding it out to Tom.
- Part 5, Question 5: 2 / two - Both Tom and his sister Anna are smiling happily.
Common mistakes
- Reading the object name but missing its colour or position.
- Counting too quickly before checking the entire scene.
- Writing more than one word in Part 5.
- Forgetting that the first letter is already provided in Part 3.
Teacher tip
Ask the learner to point to the visual evidence before answering. After grading, have the learner read every corrected sentence aloud.
