Reading & Writing
A five-part, 25-question picture paper written and illustrated for All English 4U. It follows familiar Pre-A1 activity types without reproducing a published test.
Look and read - tick or cross
Put a tick if the sentence matches the picture, or a cross if it does not.
Look and read - write yes or no
Look at the living room. Write yes if the sentence is right and no if it is wrong.

Look at the pictures - write the words
Use the letters to spell each animal word. Example: frog - f/r/o/g.
A cat - choose the right word
Read the description. Choose a word from the word bank for each gap.

A CAT
I am a small animal with four legs and soft fur. I live with children and families in their [1]. In the day, I like walking in the green [2] and looking at birds. Children give me cool [3] to drink in a small bowl. When I am tired, I sleep on a warm [4] in the living room. People can hear me at [5] when I catch mice. What am I? I am a cat.
Look at the pictures - answer the questions
Write a one-word answer. Examples: What is the boy’s name? - Leo. What is he playing with? - a dog.

- Part 1, Question 3: cross - The picture shows an open book, not a chair.
- Part 1, Question 4: tick - The picture shows a brown horse.
- Part 1, Question 5: cross - The picture shows a banana, not a clock.
- Part 2, Question 1: yes - The orange cat is asleep on the rug in front of the television.
- Part 2, Question 2: yes - Dad is sitting on the green armchair reading a newspaper.
- Part 2, Question 3: no - There are two monkeys on the television screen, not three.

- Part 4, Question 1: house - A pet cat lives with a family in a house.
- Part 4, Question 2: garden - Cats enjoy walking outside in a grassy garden.
- Part 4, Question 3: milk - A cat drinks milk from a bowl.
- Part 4, Question 4: sofa - Cats like sleeping comfortably on a sofa.
- Part 4, Question 5: night - Cats are active and catch mice at night.
- Part 5, Question 1: ball - Leo is throwing a red ball for his dog.
- Part 5, Question 2: dog - The white dog is holding the red ball in its mouth.
- Part 5, Question 3: white - The dog has clean white fur.
- Part 5, Question 4: towel / sand - Leo is sitting on a towel on the beach sand.
- Part 5, Question 5: ice cream / icecream / ice creams - Leo and his dad are eating ice cream cones.
Common mistakes
- Reading the object name but missing its colour or position.
- Counting too quickly before checking the entire scene.
- Writing more than one word in Part 5.
- Forgetting that the first letter is already provided in Part 3.
Teacher tip
Ask the learner to point to the visual evidence before answering. After grading, have the learner read every corrected sentence aloud.
