Learning guide
Level: A2 Flyers.
Topic: The Garden Railway Open Day.
Learning objectives
- Identify children from clues about their clothing, actions and positions.
- Listen for a surname, a day, a place, a number and an object in a booking conversation.
- Match each child to the object they finally choose for a railway display.
- Distinguish three picture options by listening for the confirmed detail.
- Follow position clues to colour four flags and write one word on a station sign.
Before you start: Read each task and look at its example. Notice differences between people and pictures, and predict the kind of word needed in each form gap. You will hear each part twice. Use headphones or clear speakers, and leave Show Answer and the transcripts until after your own attempt.
Teacher tip: Give learners time to preview each part. Ask them to explain the clue that supports an answer, especially when a speaker corrects an earlier idea. For Part 5, check the object, position, colour and the writing instruction separately.
Listening strategy
Before you listen
Look carefully at each picture and notice small differences: clothing, position, direction and what a person is doing. In a form, read the words around each gap so you know what kind of answer is needed. For a three-picture question, name one clear difference between the choices.
While you listen
Wait for the speaker to finish correcting or changing an idea. A person may mention an object first and then choose a different one. For spelling, listen to each letter and check that you have the right number of letters. For colouring, find the object by its position before choosing the colour.
After you listen
Check that each written answer fits the space and the question. Compare each picture choice with the final detail in the conversation. In Part Five, check the example first, then follow each instruction separately. The word answer is one word. For each coloured flag, check both its position and colour.
Show Answer does not fill your answers or give credit. Use the transcript to check the clues after listening.
