Learning guide
Level: A2 Flyers.
Topic: The Riverside Model-Boat Day.
Learning objectives
- Identify children by names, clothing, actions and positions.
- Write a spelled name, a number, a river name, a time and a room.
- Match lost objects to confirmed places and choose pictures after listening to corrections.
- Follow four colour instructions and write a word for the clubhouse sign.
Before you start: Inspect the people, places, pictures and form labels. Review colour names, numbers, times and position words. Choose a colour before touching an outlined object.
Teacher tip: Give time to scan each task, then play its recording twice. Ask learners to explain the words that confirm each choice. Show Answer displays evidence without completing their answers.
Listening strategy: Wait for the final confirmed detail after words such as no and but. Identify the correct object before selecting its colour. Check spelling and numbers after the second listening.
Listen and draw lines
Listen and draw lines between names and items in the picture. There is one example.
Narrator: Part One. Listen and draw lines. Look at the children at the riverside model-boat club. First, listen to the example.
Woman: Which girl is Mia? Is she measuring a sail?
Boy: No, that is Sophie with the ruler. Mia is at the table on the left. She is painting a little boat, and she is wearing a yellow raincoat.
Narrator: Mia is the example. Now listen and draw lines. Number one.
Woman: Where's Noah? I can see a boy by the boats.
Boy: The boy by the river is Leo. Noah is on the left, beside the noticeboard. He's holding a blue flag, and he's wearing a green jumper.
Narrator: Number two.
Woman: Is Ruby filling a boat with water?
Boy: No, she's filling the test basin. Look in the middle of the picture for the girl with two plaits and a red scarf.
Narrator: Number three.

Boy: That's Noah. Leo is carrying a wooden boat under his arm. He's standing by the rail on the right, and his shirt has blue and white stripes.
Narrator: Number four.
Woman: What is Sophie doing? Is she painting a boat too?
Boy: She's not painting. She's using a ruler to measure a sail at the workbench in front on the right. She's the girl in the purple hat.
Narrator: Number five.
Woman: Who is winding the line? Is it Zara?
Boy: Zara is looking at the map by the clubhouse door. Ethan is winding the line around a reel beside the mooring post on the left. He has orange sleeves.

📝 Listen and write
Narrator: Part Two. Listen and write. There is one example.

Girl: Yes. My surname is Green.
Woman: Green. Could you spell that, please?
Girl: G-R-E-E-N.
Narrator: Green is the example. Now listen and write. Number six.

Girl: Yes, Poppy. P-O-P-P-Y. My sister's called Polly, but I'm Poppy.
Narrator: Number seven.

Girl: I wanted that one, but it needs a new sail. I'll take boat number 18, with the white sail.
Narrator: Number eight.
Woman: Do you know the name of the river? Is it the Green River?
Girl: No, Green is my surname. The river is called Willow. W-I-L-L-O-W.

Girl: That's when the club opens. The first race is a quarter past eleven.

Narrator: Part Three. Where did Holly leave each thing? Listen and write a letter in each box. First, listen to the example.
Woman: Have you found your camera, Holly?
Girl: Yes. I left it on the wooden bench by the lily pond.
Narrator: The camera is H. Now listen. Number eleven.
Woman: Where did you leave your water bottle? Is it in the tool shed?
Girl: No. I put it beside the yellow safety boat. I was watching the helpers there.
Narrator: Number twelve.
Woman: What about your sun hat?
Girl: I left it by the stone bridge when I stopped to watch the water. I must go back for it.
Narrator: Number thirteen.
Woman: Is your map by the tall flagpole?
Girl: It was, but I took it to the information tent. I left it there with Aunt Jo.
Narrator: Number fourteen.
Woman: And your coat? Did you leave that at the tent too?
Girl: No. My coat is under the clock beside the entrance gate. I put it down when I checked the time.
Narrator: Number fifteen.
Woman: You have not lost your lunch box, have you?
Girl: No. It is on the blue picnic table under the tree. I left it there ready for lunch.
Listen and tick (✓) the box
Listen to five short conversations. Choose A, B or C for each question. The example is not scored.
Narrator: Part Four. Listen and tick the box. First listen to the example. Which boat won the first race?
Woman: Was the red boat first?
Man: No, the yellow one came second. The blue boat won.
Narrator: The answer is B. Now listen to questions sixteen to twenty.
Narrator: Number 16. What will the children use to make a sail?
Woman: Could we make the sail from this silver paper?
Boy: It might tear. The blue bag is stronger, isn't it?
Woman: Perhaps, but the white cloth will last longer in the water. Let's use that.
Narrator: Number 17. Where will the family watch the final race?
Boy: Shall we watch from the clubhouse window?
Girl: We could sit on the grass by the bridge, too.
Boy: Let's use the riverside steps. We'll have a clear view of the finish line there.
Narrator: Number 18. What time does the boat-making workshop begin?
Woman: Does the workshop start when the club opens, at ten?
Man: No, that is when we open the workshop room. The talk about making sails is at eleven.
Woman: So the workshop is at half past ten?
Man: Exactly.
Narrator: Number 19. Which animal has the club chosen for its new badge?
Girl: An otter would be a funny picture for the badge.
Boy: Or a swan, because there are swans on the river.
Girl: The kingfisher is much brighter. That's the one the club chose.
Narrator: Number 20. What will the children do after the race?
Woman: After the race, shall we help put the boats away?
Boy: The club helpers are doing that. We could have lunch by the river.
Woman: Lunch is later. First, we're taking a group photograph by the clubhouse.

Listening review and practice tips
1. Listen for the detail that identifies the answer
Before each recording, notice what the task asks you to find: a person, a written detail, a meeting place, a picture choice, or an instruction. For people, combine an action with clothing or position. If two people share one clue, wait for the second clue before choosing.
2. Notice changes, contrasts and location clues
Speakers may suggest an answer and then correct it. Listen to the whole exchange. For the lost objects, link each object to its confirmed place. In the final picture, find the object before choosing a colour or writing the word.
3. Check written answers and follow instructions in order
Listen carefully to spelled names, numbers and times. For each colour instruction, find the correct object and its position first. In the writing question, write the one requested word. Replay a part to confirm the detail before checking the answer.
