About TOEFL Primary
TOEFL Primary is ETS’s English test for young learners, typically aged 8 and above. It comes in two levels: Step 1 for children beginning their English journey and Step 2 for children with stronger skills. Both levels test Reading and Listening with child-friendly, multiple-choice questions; results are reported with stars and badges together with a CEFR level, so there is no “fail” – every child gets a positive, measurable result. Many international schools use TOEFL Primary to track progress before students move on to TOEFL Junior or Cambridge exams.
What you can practise here
Our TOEFL Primary practice tests recreate the real test experience: the same question types, kid-appropriate topics, picture-based items and recorded audio. Your child answers on the page and sees their score immediately with the correct answers explained. Tests are original teacher-written material following the official format, free to repeat as often as you like, with no account needed.
Tips for parents
Sit with your child for the first test and let them drive the mouse – confidence matters more than the score at this age. Focus review on the Listening questions they missed: replaying the audio twice and asking “what did you hear?” builds real listening skill faster than any drill. Ten to fifteen minutes a few times a week beats a long weekend session, and finishing with a question your child got right keeps motivation high.
Step 1 or Step 2?
Choose Step 1 after roughly 1–2 years of English classes, and Step 2 after 2–4 years. If your child finds our Step 2 tests comfortable, they may be ready to try Cambridge Movers or Flyers next.
