Learning guide

Level: A2 Flyers

Topic: A Miniature Railway Open Day

Learning objectives

  • Identify children from spoken appearance and action clues.
  • Listen for names, days, places, numbers and objects in a form.
  • Match named objects to railway-station locations.
  • Choose between three pictures after corrections and changed plans.
  • Follow location, colour and spelling instructions.

Before you start

Look at all the people, station places and picture choices. Predict the type of answer needed in each gap and notice the different options.

Teacher tip

Pause before each part to let learners predict the information they need. Ask them to explain the final spoken clue before checking the answer; practise the colour, landmark and spelling instructions separately if needed.

Listening strategy

Listen to the whole exchange and notice corrections or changed plans. Match appearance and action clues, check the final location, then use the spoken colour and landmark. Each part is played twice.

Learning review · A Miniature Railway Open Day

Before you listen

Study the miniature railway picture carefully. Notice clothing, actions, signs and where each person is standing. In the form, predict whether each gap needs a name, day, place, number or object. For the picture choices, notice how the three options differ.

While you listen

Listen to each whole exchange. A speaker may suggest one thing and then choose another. Listen for corrections such as but, actually and instead. For the final picture, use both the landmark and the position to find the right pennant.

After you listen

Check spellings and details against what you heard. Make sure you followed the final choice after any change of plan. For the last picture, check the colour, position, number and exact word.

For Part 5, choose a colour and select the matching object; type the word for the station sign. Show Answer never enters an answer or awards marks.
