Nia and Omar's First Show

On Saturday morning, Nia arrived at the community hall with a box of puppets. Her friend Omar was already there, painting a moon for the final scene. They had practised their play for three weeks, but this was the first time they would perform it for an audience. Nia put on an orange jumper and checked that the paper bird puppet was inside the box. Omar placed his red moon beside the small blue puppet booth, which had red curtains and a yellow star on the front.

Just before the show, the hall lights went out for a few seconds. Nia felt worried, but Omar found the switch and soon the room was bright again. Their teacher, Mrs Green, told them to take a slow breath and remember their first line. The families came in and sat on the chairs. Nia and Omar waited behind the curtain until Mrs Green introduced their play.

At first, Nia spoke too quietly, so she moved closer to the front of the stage. The children in the audience could then hear the bird's story. Omar stood beside Nia in his blue jacket and held up the moon at the right moment, and everyone watched as the bird found its way home. When the play ended, the families clapped. Nia and Omar bowed together. After the show, a little girl asked how they had made the bird's wings move. Nia showed her the sticks behind the puppet and explained that they had made it from paper.
