1 Tier 1 – The Concept & Nuance: Precise Verbs of Change

Avoid overusing the generic verb change. In IELTS Writing Task 1 (maps/processes) and Task 2, choose specific verbs that indicate degree, direction, and structural impact.

transform / undergo transformation
– Complete, fundamental overhaul of appearance or character.
“The port city was completely transformed into a commercial hub.”
modify / make modifications
– Slight, targeted adjustment to improve functionality.
“The urban planning blueprint was modified to reduce traffic congestion.”

2 Tier 2 – Collocations & Confusing Pairs

adapt vs convert
adapt: Adjust behavior to fit a new environment (“Species adapt to climate shifts”).
convert: Change physical purpose or form (“The warehouse was converted into apartments”).
shift vs fluctuate
shift: A permanent realignment in trend or attitude.
fluctuate: Repeated upward and downward volatility.

The city was changed into a modern area. (informal)
✅ The city was transformed into a modern metropolitan area.

Rule: Use transformed into / converted into for large-scale physical redevelopment.

Prices converted dramatically throughout the year.
✅ Prices fluctuated dramatically throughout the year.

Rule: Continuous variations in numbers take fluctuate, not convert.

The school made adaptations to the building.
✅ The school made modifications to / alterations to the building.

Rule: Physical structural changes are modifications / alterations, whereas adaptations relate to behavior/biology.
