Reading & Writing
A five-part, 25-question picture paper written and illustrated for All English 4U. It follows familiar Pre-A1 activity types without reproducing a published test.
Look and read - tick or cross
Put a tick if the sentence matches the picture, or a cross if it does not.
Look and read - write yes or no
Look at the sunny park playground scene. Write yes if the sentence is right and no if it is wrong.

Look at the pictures - write the words
Use the letters to spell each food word. Example: banana - b/a/n/a/n/a.
An elephant - choose the right word
Read the description. Choose a word from the word bank for each gap.

AN ELEPHANT
I am a very big grey animal. I have two big ears and four strong legs. I have a very long [1] which I use to drink water. I live in the [2] with my family and animal friends. On sunny days, I like walking through tall green [3]. My favourite food is sweet [4] and leaves from trees. Children love watching me when they visit the [5]. What am I? I am an elephant.
Look at the pictures - answer the questions
Write a one-word answer. Examples: Where are Ben and his grandma? - in the kitchen. What color is the big bowl? - yellow.

- Part 4, Question 3: grass - Elephants walk across fields of tall green grass.
- Part 4, Question 4: fruit - Elephants love eating sweet fruit and green leaves.
- Part 4, Question 5: zoo - Children visit the zoo to see big animals like elephants.
- Part 5, Question 1: three / 3 - There are three brown eggs sitting in the egg box on the table.
- Part 5, Question 2: cookies / biscuits - Ben is sliding a metal tray of cookies into the oven.
- Part 5, Question 3: milk - The ginger cat is drinking white milk from a small bowl on the floor.
- Part 5, Question 4: chair / table - The cat is sleeping under Ben kitchen chair.
- Part 5, Question 5: cookie / biscuit - Ben is holding a chocolate chip cookie in his hand to eat.
Common mistakes
- Reading the object name but missing its colour or position.
- Counting too quickly before checking the entire scene.
- Writing more than one word in Part 5.
- Forgetting that the first letter is already provided in Part 3.
Teacher tip
Encourage learners to check the visual details carefully before answering. After completing the test, have them read each corrected sentence aloud to practise pronunciation.
