Reading & Writing
A five-part, 25-question picture paper written and illustrated for All English 4U. It follows familiar Pre-A1 activity types without reproducing a published test.
Look and read - tick or cross
Put a tick if the sentence matches the picture, or a cross if it does not.
Look and read - write yes or no
Look at the playground. Write yes if the sentence is right and no if it is wrong.

Look at the pictures - write the words
Use the letters to spell each picture word. Example: train - t/r/a/i/n.
A kite - choose the right word
Read the description. Choose a word from the word bank for each gap.
A KITE
I am a toy that children use outside. I have a long [1]. Children hold my [2]. I fly in the [3]. You can play with me in a [4]. The [5] helps me move. What am I? I am a kite.
Look at the pictures - answer the questions
Write a one-word answer. Examples: Where is Tom? - bedroom. What colour is his bag? - green.

- Part 1, Question 1: tick - The picture shows a blue clock.
- Part 1, Question 2: cross - The picture shows a shoe, not a sock.
- Part 1, Question 3: tick - The picture shows a purple hat.
- Part 1, Question 4: tick - The picture shows an orange fish.
- Part 1, Question 5: cross - It is a ball, but it is yellow, not blue.
- Part 2, Question 1: yes - The boy is holding the string of the blue kite.
- Part 2, Question 2: no - The girl is sitting on the bench.
- Part 2, Question 3: yes - The black dog is asleep below the bench.
- Part 2, Question 4: no - There are two ducks in the pond.
- Part 2, Question 5: yes - The teacher is holding a green bag beside the tree.
- Part 3, Question 1: cake - The letters make the word cake.
- Part 3, Question 2: shell - The letters make the word shell.
- Part 3, Question 3: robot - The letters make the word robot.
- Part 3, Question 4: chair - The letters make the word chair.
- Part 3, Question 5: lamp - The letters make the word lamp.
- Part 4, Question 1: tail - A kite can have a long tail.
- Part 4, Question 2: string - A child holds the kite string.
- Part 4, Question 3: sky - A kite flies in the sky.
- Part 4, Question 4: park - A park is an open place where children can fly a kite.
- Part 4, Question 5: wind - Wind moves a kite through the air.
- Part 5, Question 1: book - Tom is putting a blue book in the green bag.
- Part 5, Question 2: bicycle / bike - Tom is riding a red bicycle.
- Part 5, Question 3: purple - His sister is wearing a purple helmet.
- Part 5, Question 4: sandwiches - Both children are eating sandwiches.
- Part 5, Question 5: rabbit - A white rabbit is sitting beside the tree.
Common mistakes
- Reading the object name but missing its colour.
- Counting too quickly before checking the whole picture.
- Writing more than one word in Part 5.
- Forgetting that the first letter is already given in Part 3.
Teacher tip
Ask the learner to point to the visual evidence before answering. After grading, have the learner read every corrected sentence aloud.
