Reading & Writing
A five-part, 25-question picture paper written and illustrated for All English 4U. It follows familiar Pre-A1 activity types without reproducing a published test.
Look and read - tick or cross
Put a tick if the sentence matches the picture, or a cross if it does not.
Look and read - write yes or no
Look at the playground scene. Write yes if the sentence is right and no if it is wrong.

Look at the pictures - write the words
Use the letters to spell each wild animal word. Example: frog - f/r/o/g.
A bicycle - choose the right word
Read the description. Choose a word from the word bank for each gap.

A BICYCLE
I am a popular ride. I have two round wheels and two pedals. Children love to ride me outdoors in the [1] on sunny days. You steer me using two handlebars with your [2]. I have a soft seat, and there is a shiny little [3] on my handlebars that goes ding-dong when you push it. When evening comes, my bright front [4] helps you see the road clearly. Many boys and girls ride me every morning to go to [5]. What am I? I am a bicycle.
Look at the pictures - answer the questions
Write a one-word answer. Examples: Where are the family? - beach. What is Mum sitting on? - towel.

- Part 5, Question 1: red - Tim placed a small bright red flag on top of the sandcastle.
- Part 5, Question 2: dad / father - Dad is splashing and playing happily in the shallow sea water.
- Part 5, Question 3: hat - A white seagull is perched directly on Dad's straw sun hat.
- Part 5, Question 4: watermelon - Tim and Lucy are eating slices of watermelon on the blue beach towel.
- Part 5, Question 5: two / 2 - There are two children (Tim and Lucy) eating watermelon.
Common mistakes
- Reading the object name but missing its colour or position.
- Counting too quickly before checking the entire scene.
- Writing more than one word in Part 5.
- Forgetting that the first letter is already provided in Part 3.
Teacher tip
Remind young learners to look carefully at every detail in the pictures before answering. In Part 1 and Part 2, pay close attention to colors, positions, and numbers. In Part 3, note that the first letter is already in place. In Part 5, always check spelling and write only one word.
