You will hear five short conversations. For questions 1–5, choose the right answer (A, B or C). Each conversation is played twice.
Q1 — When is the party? · Mary: Hello. Tom: Hello, Mary. It’s Tom. Would you like to come to my birthday party? Mary: I’d love to. Your birthday’s on Wednesday, isn’t it? Tom: Yes, it is. But I’m having the party on Thursday. It’s at my house. (= C Thursday)
Q2 — Where are the glasses? · Female: Are my glasses by the telephone? Male: No. Where did you leave them? Female: Well … I had them when I phoned Alice. Male: Here they are, on the floor … (= A on the floor)
Q3 — How much are the shoes? · Female: Are these white shoes in the sale? Male: Yes. They’re £10 cheaper this week. Female: So they’re £15.60? Male: That’s right. Female: OK. I’ll take them. (= C £15.60)
Q4 — What will the weather be like in the afternoon? · Male: Would you like to play tennis this afternoon? Female: I don’t think we’ll be able to. It’s going to rain. Male: But it’s very sunny at the moment. Female: Yes, I know, but it’s going to change later. Male: That’s a pity! (= A rain)
Q5 — What time will she take the train? · Female: Excuse me. Is there a train to London at four o’clock? Male: No, but there’s one at a quarter to four, madam. Female: Mm, that’s too early. When’s the one after that? Male: Ten past five. Female: Yes, I can catch that one. (= C 5:10 / ten past five)
Presents for Paul’s family
Listen to Teresa talking to Paul about presents for his family. What is she going to buy for each person? For questions 6–10, choose a letter A–H next to each person. Example (Kevin): A — book.
Teresa: Paul … as I’m visiting your family at Christmas, I’d like to take them some presents — what do you suggest?
Paul: Oh, that’s a good idea. Well, let’s start with my brothers. Kevin likes reading, so buy him a book (example = A book), and Jon really likes sports, or something to do with football … Teresa: How about a football shirt? Paul: Fine. (Q6 Jon = E shirt)

Carlos — joining the library
Listen to Carlos asking for information about a library. For questions 11–15, tick A, B or C. Example: The library is closed until → C Thursday.
Female: Hello, West College. Which department would you like? Carlos: The library please. Female: The library’s closed until Thursday. (example = C Thursday)
Carlos: Yes, my name’s Carlos Sanchez and I’d like some information. I’m a student at the Central School and I’d like to join the library. Female: Do you have a student card from your school? Carlos: No, I don’t. Female: Ah. Well then, you must bring a letter from your teacher. And two photos. (Q11 = B teacher’s letter)
Carlos: OK. How much does it cost to join? Female: Well, it usually costs fifteen euros, but students can join for ten. (Q12 = A 10 euros)
Carlos: Oh good. And can I take books out? Female: Yes. You get four tickets and you can keep the books for three weeks. (Q13 = C 4 library tickets)

You will hear a woman telephoning a garage about her car. Listen and complete questions 16–20. You will hear the conversation twice.
Male: Good morning. Jackson’s Garage. Can I help you? Mary: Yes, please. I’m having some trouble with my car. Can you come to have a look at it? Male: Can I have your name, please, Miss? Mary: Yes, my name’s Mary Wilson.
Male: Now, what’s the trouble? Mary: It’s the brakes. When I was driving to work this morning they weren’t working very well. Male: Oh, dear. Don’t worry. We’ll come and repair them. Mary: Thank you. (Q16 = brakes)
Male: Can you tell me your address please? Mary: Well, I’m at my office. It’s at 31 Hill Road. The car’s parked outside the office. (Q17 = Hill)
Male: Could we also have your office phone number? Mary: Yes, it’s 350519. Can you come this morning? Male: I’m afraid we can’t. We’re very busy until lunchtime. Mary: It’s very important. I really need my car tonight. How soon can you come? (Q18 = 350519)

Radio — Old School Friends
You will hear a man talking on the radio about Old School Friends. Listen and complete questions 21–25. You will hear the information twice.
Presenter: And now, in this part of the programme we try to put people in contact with their old schoolfriends. So, if you remember any of these people and you want to see them again, then listen carefully.
