Five short conversations
You will hear five short conversations. For questions 1–5, choose the right answer (A, B or C). Each conversation is played twice.
Q1 — Sports centre · Man: Excuse me, is sports centre near here? Woman: Yes, about ten minutes’ walk. Go past the bank and take the second road on the left. It’s on the corner (= position A, above bank).
Q2 — Petrol · Woman: Could you put 30 litres of petrol in my car? Man: Did you say 13 litres? Woman: No, 30 litres. Fill it up please.
Q3 — Which table · Woman: Look — round table is very nice. Man: Yes, plastic and only 3 legs. Woman: Do you want one with 4 legs? Man: Yes — look, here’s a square one. Let’s have this.
Q4 — Class time · Boy: Are you going to English class this afternoon? Girl: Yes, it’s at 3 o’clock. Boy: 2 o’clock? I’ve got to go to dentist at half past two. Girl: Don’t worry, I’ll get the homework for you.
Q5 — Emma’s holiday weather · Man: Did you enjoy your holiday in Australia? Emma: Yes, but it was wet most of the time. Man: Really? Isn’t it always hot? Emma: Mm. Not when I was there.
Jane’s holiday clothes — colours
Listen to Jane talking to a friend about some clothes she has bought for her holiday. What colours are her clothes? For each clothes item (6–10), choose a letter A–H. Example (shirt): H (white).
Tim: Have you been shopping?
Jane: Yes, I bought some clothes — different colours.
Tim: Nice white shirt (example = H white).
Jane: Bought it in same shop as this dress. Tim: Lovely green! And have you bought a jacket? (Q6 dress = D green)
Jane: It was difficult to find one but I finally got this dark brown one (Q7 jacket = C brown).
Jane: I need a new sweater. I always wear this red one — old now. So I bought this one. Tim: Mm — orange — unusual colour. (Q8 sweater = F orange)
Jane: I’ve been busy. Tim: You have been busy.
Jane: The coat was a bit expensive. Do you like it? Tim: Oh yes. Black — and those new black shoes look great with the coat. Jane: Well, actually they’re dark blue, not black. (Q9 coat = A black, Q10 shoes = B blue — the dark blue ones)
Mrs Lee’s business trip — secretary briefing
Listen to Mrs Lee talking to her secretary about her business trip. For questions 11–15, choose A, B or C. Example: Mrs Lee will leave on → B Saturday.
Mrs Lee: When will I leave on Saturday or Sunday? Secretary: I’ve booked your ticket for Saturday, leaves at 8 — get to airport about 8 (example = B Saturday).
Mrs Lee: Plane goes at? Secretary: Yes — arrive London at eleven fifty — won’t stop in Frankfurt this time. Mr Porter from Amsterdam office arrive same time, go together to your meeting at the factory — no time to go to hotel (Q11 — plane at 10 a.m.; Q13 first to factory = A).
Mrs Lee: Going to London (Q12 = C).
After meeting? Secretary: Afternoon free. In evening you’ll meet Jane and Peter Cook.
Mrs Lee: Their home? Secretary: Not this time. Going to a Japanese restaurant near your hotel (Q14 = A restaurant).
Then next morning go to Paris on train (Q15 = B train).
Language school — School of Italian Studies
A man asks for information about a language school. Listen and complete the form (16–20). You will hear the conversation twice.

Man: I saw advert. Can you give some info?
Woman: Courses 6 or 9 months. Next courses begin next Monday (Q16).
Man: How many students? Woman: Not many — about 15. Good number (Q17).
Cost? — Only for the coursebook — £12.99 (Q18).
School open 8 am – 7 pm Mon-Fri. Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm (Q19).
Underground? — Green Park (Q20).
Day trip — Lake Tandy
A tour guide gives information about a day trip to Lake Tandy. Complete the notes (21–25). You will hear the talk twice.
🚌 DAY TRIP — Lake Tandy
Guide: Tomorrow trip to Lake Tandy. Leave 9.30 a.m. Seven-hour trip — be back at half past four (Q21 = 7 hours).
Stop 3 places. First: a castle, 600 years old, very interesting (Q22).
After: stop at a café at 1 o’clock for lunch (Q23).
Stop 3: drive to beach and lake — three-quarters of an hour. Swim, or sit and look at scenery. Lake beautiful, lots of birds (Q24 = beach/lake).
Take a camera to take excellent photographs (Q25).
