Five short conversations
You will hear five short conversations. For questions 1–5, choose the right answer (A, B or C). Each conversation is played twice.
Q1 — Mary to Scotland · John: Are you taking the train? Mary: No, I’m driving there tomorrow. John: Why don’t you go by coach? Mary: Oh no, it takes seven hours.
Q2 — Shoes · Peter: Mum, have you seen my brown shoes? Mother: Yes, they’re under the table. Peter: No they’re not. I left them on the chair this morning. Mother: There they are — under the window!
Q3 — Football match · Tom: Does it start at quarter past twelve? Bill: No, it was early this week. It usually begins at 2 o’clock. Tom: So it’ll be the usual time next week? Bill: Yes.
Q4 — Box of chocolates · Boy: Which box shall we get? Girl: Round boxes with flowers are nice. Boy: Square box is cheaper. Girl: It’s Mum’s birthday — let’s get the big round one! Boy: OK.
Q5 — Wendy’s birthday · John: Wendy, you’re twenty-one on Saturday? Wendy: No, my birthday’s on May the eighteenth. John: Well, Saturday is the eighteenth. Wendy: No it’s not, it’s the sixteenth.
Pete’s holiday — weather each day
Listen to Pete talking to a friend about his holiday. What was the weather like each day? For each day (6–10), choose a letter A–H. Example (Monday): B (cold).
Helen: How was the weather each day?
Pete: Monday was very cold (example = B cold).
Tuesday was so windy I just stayed in the hotel all day (Q6 = H wind).
Wednesday was better — there wasn’t any wind and it was sunny most of the day (Q7 = F sun).
Thursday was very cloudy and it looked as if it was going to snow (Q8 = A cloud). But it didn’t.
Friday — it rained a lot (Q9 = D rain).
Saturday the weather was getting better and it was quite warm — but it was a bit too late (Q10 = G warm).
Michael & Marina — new sports centre
Listen to Michael talking to Marina about a new sports centre. For questions 11–15, choose A, B or C. Example: Where is the new sports centre? → A Long Road.
Michael: Have you been to the new sports centre? Marina: Where is it? Michael: Long Road, near Bridge Street (example = A).
Marina: Lots of sports? Michael: Yes — I played table-tennis and volleyball last week. Not tennis yet — they’re going to build courts next year (Q11 = A tennis).
Marina: Is it expensive? Michael: £50 a year if you’re 15 to 18, and £30 a year if you’re under 15 (Marina is 14, so £30 a year — Q12 = B).
Michael: On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday it stays open late till 10 o’clock (3 days — Q13 = B).
Michael: I got the number 16 bus from the bus station (Q14 = B).
Michael: Any day except Thursday. Marina: Well, why don’t we go on Friday? (Q15 = C).
Flat for rent — Lonflats Agency
A man phones the Lonflats Agency about a flat for rent. Complete the form (16–20). You will hear the conversation twice.

Day trip — Chester
A tour guide gives information about a day trip to Chester. Complete the notes (21–25). You will hear the talk twice.
🚌 TRIP TO CHESTER
Guide: Trip to Chester. Coach leaves at 9.15 a.m. — an hour and a half drive. We arrive at quarter to eleven / 10.45 (Q21). Have a coffee, then visit the castle (Q22). Family ticket for the castle — £3 adults but only £8 for a family with children (Q23). Lots to see and we’ll be there about two hours. Lunch — sandwiches in a park (Q24). Afternoon — walk round the old market(s) (Q25). You can buy presents there.
