Write a story

In the A2 Key Writing test, Part 7 gives you three pictures that tell a story. You must write a short story of 35 words or more that shows what happens in the pictures. Write your story, then compare it with the model answer.

Look at the three pictures. They tell a story about two friends and a film. Write the story in your own words. Use the past simple.
Picture 1
Two friends excited about a new film poster
Picture 2
The two friends see a Cinema closed sign
Picture 3
The friends watching a film at home on the sofa
Think about these questions to help you:
  • Picture 1: Who are the two friends? What did they see? How did they feel?
  • Picture 2: Where did they go? What was the problem?
  • Picture 3: What did they decide to do instead? How did they feel at the end?

Model story — 35+ words, all three pictures
Last week, Emma saw a poster for a new film and felt very excited. She invited her friend Leo to the cinema. When they arrived, there was a “Cinema closed” sign, so they were sad. They decided to go home and watched the film on TV with popcorn. It was a great evening!

Tip: a good story uses past tenses (saw, arrived, decided, watched), links the three pictures in order, and describes how the people feel.
