Write a story

In the A2 Key Writing test, Part 7 gives you three pictures that tell a story. You must write a short story of 35 words or more that shows what happens in the pictures. Write your story, then compare it with the model answer.

Look at the three pictures. They tell a story. Write the story in your own words.
Picture 1
A boy walking home from school
Picture 2
The boy opening the kitchen door
Picture 3
A surprise birthday party
Think about these questions to help you:
  • Picture 1: Who is the boy? How old is he? Where is he going?
  • Picture 2: Where is he now? What is he doing?
  • Picture 3: Who can you see? What are they doing? How does the boy feel?

Model story — 35+ words, all three pictures
It was Jack’s birthday. After school, he walked home slowly because he was tired. He didn’t know about the surprise. When he opened the kitchen door, all his friends shouted “Happy Birthday!” There was a big cake, and Jack felt very happy!

Tip: a good story uses past tenses (walked, opened, shouted), links the three pictures in order, and describes how the person feels at the end.
