Five short conversations
You will hear five short conversations. You will hear each conversation twice. There is one question for each conversation. For questions 1–5, choose the right answer (A, B or C).
Q1 — How will Jill go to the football match? · Man: Are you going to drive? Woman: Parking will be difficult. Man: I’m going to walk. Woman: OK — that’s cheaper than the bus. (1 = A on foot)
Q2 — Who’s going to visit the woman? · Woman: My sister’s son is coming tomorrow. Man: I met him when he was ten. Woman: He’s a father now — but he’s not bringing the baby. (2 = C a man)
Q3 — What will Ruby do tonight? · Girl: Kate wants me to go to the cinema. Mum: Not if you haven’t finished your school work. Girl: I have! And I’ve cleaned my shoes. Mum: That’s all right then. (3 = C go to the cinema)
Q4 — How much did the woman’s desk cost? · Man: I spent sixty pounds fifty. Woman: I paid sixty-six pounds fifty for mine. Man: I saw one for fifty-five pounds. (4 = A £66.50)
Q5 — Where is the man’s watch? · Man: I can’t find my watch! Woman: Did you take it off doing the washing-up? Man: It’s not in the kitchen. Woman: You left it on the bath. (5 = B on the bath)
Lena’s restaurants — what’s the problem?
Listen to Lena talking to a friend about some restaurants. What is the problem with each one? For questions 6–10, write a letter A–H next to each restaurant. Example: Rose Garden → B (cold).
Man: We’ve got to choose a restaurant for our class party. What about the Rose Garden? Woman: Too cold, tables are outside (example = B). Carla’s Café is closed — Man: open again but not big enough for our class (6 Carla’s Café = G small).
Man: Pizza Place? Woman: Food’s good but the lights are so low you can’t read the menu (7 = C dark). Curry House? Man: They’re fully booked Saturday (8 = E full).
Woman: Captain Crab — the music was so loud it was impossible to talk (9 = F noisy). Man: The Carlton Hotel? Woman: Even a snack costs a lot (10 = D expensive).
Helen & Sam — being in a rock band
Listen to Helen talking to her friend, Sam, about being in a rock band. For questions 11–15, choose A, B or C. Example: In Nick’s band, Helen → B (sings).
Helen: I sing in Nick’s band (example = B); he plays drums — we need a guitar player. Sam: Sure! Helen: Free Wednesday? Sam: How about the next day or Friday? Helen: Let’s say Thursday — Nick’s busy Fridays (11 = B Thursday).
Helen: Come to my flat at seven thirty; the band uses his dad’s garage because his bedroom’s too small (12 = A garage). Sam: Bring anything? Helen: Nick’s mum makes sandwiches and I bring CDs. A warm sweater‘s a good idea — it gets cold (13 = C a sweater).
Sam: Next concert? Helen: The college booked us for the Saturday before your brother’s party; the club’s fully booked (14 = C a college). Sam: Do you get paid? Helen: The band gets a hundred and ten pounds and we each have twenty-five; Nick keeps ten (15 = B £25).
Party for old school friends
You will hear a man talking on the telephone about a party. Listen and complete questions 16–20. You will hear the conversation twice.
🎉 PARTY FOR OLD SCHOOL FRIENDS
Tony: Hello Sally, it’s Tony Bassett — we were at Romford School. There’s a party for our year. Sally: When? Tony: We started on the fourth of September, but the party’s on the seventh — ten years later (16 = 7th September). Sally: That’s a Saturday, isn’t it? (17 = Saturday)
Tony: It’s at my sister Margaret’s house. She’s married now — Margaret Jaggard (J-A-double-G-A-R-D) (18 = JAGGARD). She lives at number eleven, Park Road, near the park (19 = Park Road). Sally: Bring food? Tony: There’s enough food, but everybody’s bringing some photos (20 = photos).
Sea World
You will hear some information about a place called Sea World. Listen and complete questions 21–25. You will hear the information twice.
🐬 SEA WORLD
Sea World is open six days a week, Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Visitors welcome April to February, but we close in March for painting and repairs (21 = March). Every morning at eleven there’s a film about the sea — go to the Visitor Centre to watch it (22 = Visitor Centre).
The dolphin show begins at two fifteen every afternoon; be in your seats by two o’clock (23 = 2.15 p.m.). The shop is open all day — children will like the many different toys and books (24 = toys). Adult tickets cost seven pounds; children’s tickets are four pounds twenty-five (25 = £4.25).
