Correct / Incorrect — A visit to the Ocean Centre

A visit to the Ocean Centre
by Rebecca Hardy, aged 13

We don’t live near the sea, so when my teacher told us that our own town had a special ocean centre, I could hardly believe it. I had never been inside one before, so I was really excited about the visit.

When we arrived, we were given tickets. Our guide explained that all the money raised from ticket sales is used directly for ocean conservation projects around the world – something that made me feel very proud to be there.

We started our ‘ocean journey’, which begins with freshwater streams and rivers and gradually takes you deeper into the open sea. It was amazing to watch the feeding time, though only the centre’s own trained staff are allowed to feed the fish – visitors must watch from behind a glass screen.

One of the highlights was the seahorse exhibition. Our guide told us it is the largest collection of seahorses anywhere in Europe, which made us all feel very lucky to see it.

There was one special talk that day, and it was about sharks. I was a little nervous at first, but I found it absolutely fascinating and learned a great deal. Our guide also told us that visitors are welcome to go outside for some fresh air and come back in again later the same day – a really helpful thing to know.

I left feeling I had discovered so much. I would definitely go back again one day.

Multiple Choice — Skateboarding
Read the text and questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D.
Skateboarding
by Rachel Martin, aged 11

I have been skateboarding for about eighteen months now. At first, the only skatepark was in town, about 10 kilometres away, and my mum said it was too far for me to go. I was really disappointed, but things are much better now because they have opened a brand new skatepark near where I live. It even has lights so we can use it in the evenings.

There is also a skatepark at my school, which is great. The only problem is that it is shared with rollerbladers and BMX bike riders as well. This makes it quite dangerous for younger children, who sometimes want to use it too.

My favourite trick is jumping over boxes. It looks simple, but it actually needs a lot of concentration – you have to think about exactly where to place your feet on the board, or you could easily fall off. I have been practising this trick for months.

My sister is a skateboard instructor, so she has taught me a lot. I hope to be as good as her one day!
