Five short conversations
You will hear five short conversations. For questions 1–5, choose the right answer (A, B or C). Each conversation is played twice.
Q1 — What have they forgotten? · Male: I’ve got the passports here. Female: And the tickets are in my bag. Male: What about the camera? Female: Oh no! I’ve left it at home. And I really wanted to take some holiday photos. (= B camera)
Q2 — What time does the train go? · Male: Hurry up! We’ll be late. Female: What time does the train go? Male: At six fifteen. We’ve got to leave in fifteen minutes. Female: I’m nearly ready. (= A — clock showing 6:15)
Q3 — Where is Room 22? · Male: Can you tell me the way to Room 22? Female: Well … Go straight down here and it’s the second door on the right. Male: Do I have to go through the main hall? Female: No, it’s the door on the right, just before you get to the main hall. (= B — the room labelled B on the map, just before the main hall)
Q4 — Which man wants to see him? · Male: Which man wants to see me? Female: The one over there, wearing a hat. Male: The one with the glasses? Female: No, not him. The other one. (= A — two men have hats: B has glasses, A doesn’t. “The other one” = A, hat without glasses)
Q5 — How did the woman get to work? · Male: Oh, the traffic’s terrible today. Female: Yes, it took me forty minutes by bus. Male: Well, I drove and it took me an hour. Female: An hour! It’s probably quicker by bicycle. (= C — final reveal: she drove the car the next day)
Paul talking to a friend about his family
Listen to Paul talking to a friend about his family. What does each person do? For questions 6–10, write a letter A–H next to each person. Example (Sally): H — writer.
Friend: Tell me about your family, Paul. Paul: Yes. Is about your sister Sally? Friend: Yes, is she your only sister? Paul: She is. But I have two brothers. One’s older than me, and Bill’s the younger.
Friend: How old is Bill? Paul: He’s nineteen. He’s studying French in Paris at the moment. (Q6 Bill = F student)
Friend: Yes, but Sally is the famous one. And David? What does he do? Paul: Oh, he’s a teacher, in the same school as my mother. My mother used to be a doctor but she’s stopped working now.
Friend: And what about your father? Paul: My father — he’s a doctor as well. He works in a clinic in town. (Q7 David = G teacher · Q8 Paul’s mother = E stopped work · Q9 Paul’s father = B doctor)
Friend: And you, Paul? Are you a doctor too? Paul: No! I’m a bank clerk — I work in a bank, the one in the High Street next to the bookshop. (Q10 Paul = A bank clerk)
Eric & Mary — weekend plans with Carlos
Listen to Eric talking to Mary about the weekend. Their friend, Carlos, is coming to visit them. For questions 11–15, tick A, B or C. Example: What does Carlos hate? → A shopping.
Mary: So, Eric, what do you want to do at the weekend, when Carlos comes? Eric: Well, Eric, I must go shopping on Saturday morning. He hates shopping. But we could go to the museum and then meet you for lunch. Mary: What time?
Eric: There’s a good football match on Saturday afternoon — Carlos’ll like that. Mary: OK. (Q11 = B Saturday afternoon)
Mary: Do you want to eat at home in the evening? Eric: What about going to a restaurant? We haven’t been to that Chinese restaurant for months. Mary: OK. Let’s do that. (Q12 = C Chinese restaurant)
Mary: Now, what about Sunday? Eric: If we get up early on Sunday, we could go for a drive in the countryside. (Q13 = A go for a drive)
Mary: Yes, and we could have lunch in a pub somewhere. (Q14 = B in a pub)

You will hear a telephone conversation. A girl wants to speak to Martin, but he is not there. Listen and complete questions 16–20. You will hear the conversation twice.

Elaine: Tell Martin that the party tonight is at the Grand Hotel. I’ll meet him there. (Q17 = (the) Grand Hotel)
