FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the things every CELPIP first-timer wonders about.

You can take CELPIP at test centres in most major Canadian cities, and the list of international locations grows every year. Availability changes often, so check the official CELPIP website before you plan. Tip: book two to three weeks ahead — weekend seats in big cities fill up fast.

Each skill gets its own CELPIP level from 1 to 12, and it maps straight onto a CLB level — so you always know exactly where you stand. Listening and Reading are machine-scored, while Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained raters. There is no overall average: immigration programs look at every skill on its own. Tip: lifting your weakest skill usually earns you more CRS points than polishing your strongest.

CELPIP happens entirely on a computer in one sitting of about three hours, uses everyday North American English, and records your Speaking answers — no face-to-face interview. IRCC accepts CELPIP and IELTS General Training equally, so pick whichever suits you. Tip: if you type faster than you write by hand, CELPIP plays to your strengths.

That depends on where you start. From around CLB 7 (≈ IELTS 6.0), most learners reach CLB 9 after two to four months of focused practice — Writing and Speaking usually deserve the most attention. Tip: one full timed practice test each week builds more exam stamina than daily untimed drills.
