Use the simple past to talk about an event that finished before.

▸ Present: I study every day. · Past: I studied yesterday.

Make the negative with did not / didn’t + base verb.

▸ Past: I studied yesterday. · Negative: I did not study yesterday.

Regular verbs — add -ed:

Verb type Rule Examples
most verbs add -ed rain → rained
end in -e add -d arrive → arrived
consonant + y change y to i + ed try → tried
one syllable + vowel + consonant double consonant + ed stop → stopped
